Minimized Key Chain

My key chain has gotten out of control!

Between the car remote, the car key, house key, safe key, mail box key, 11 club cards and a bottle opener. I have WAY too many things to carry around in my pocket.

So I took everything off the key ring except my car remote. Then laid it all out to decide what I really needed to carry around with me all the time.

After considerable thought, I ended up only adding two items. My car key and house key.

Then I took all of my club cards and created a few combined cards at Just One Club Card. I’ll have them laminated at work and put it in my wallet. The remaining keys I added to a second keyring and put it into the console of my car. I figured I can just grab it as needed from there instead of always carrying everything around.

So here is a picture of my new set up.

What?! I forgot something? Oh right the bottle opener! Well since I was in college (many moons ago) I’ve always carried a bottle opener on my key chain. But honestly I don’t think I have used it in the last ten years. So I retired the bottle opener from my key chain.

Most club cards will look up your membership if you just give the cashier the phone number you put on your membership form. So, If you REALLY want to pare down all bulk, eliminate the ones that allow you to do that.

…of course a REAL minimalist would shop less & belong to fewer clubs. 😉

I did get rid of several that I do not use anymore. 🙂

I can really identify with this post – I just pared down my keyring too. The total list of keys I have now are:

1 car key (yay Ford with their combined door and ignition keys!)
3 apartment keys (yes, they’re all necessary – separate keys for the door to the apartment, the door to the elevator, and the door to the stairs – and that’s not counting the mailbox key that my wife keeps)
My keychain knife (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001G545R2/) that’s incredibly useful – and, as a bonus, it has a built-in bottle opener for you Marc!

This way all the keys I need on a day-to-day basis are right there together. I keep cards for grocery stores, etc. in my wallet.

Thanks for the post Marc, and have a great day!

Love the little key chain knife. But I have had several of the little Swiss Army ones donated to TSA when I forget to take it off prior to flying.

Great idea, Marc. I’m going to tackle my key chain as soon as finish this little kitchen remodel thing…

Have you tried putting your club cards on your phone? There are apps for iPhone. For other phones, you could try getting a clear photo of the cards and put those photos on your phone. Whether they will scan at the register seems to be a little hit and miss. But, if it works for you, it would mean less stuff to carry around.

Well I gave up my smart phone last year. I did have an app on my iPhone 3G when I did have it, but only some of the store scanners would read it. So I ended up giving my phone number to get credit for it. I don’t know it it would work with a newer smart phone that has a higher resolution screen. It would be nice to hear from other people on this. Even suggest some apps that readers could use.

But I have a decent laser printer at home and have had no problems with the little card I made.

Too many keys on your key ring is not good in your car ignition; well at least thats what I heard anyway. You may have ignition problems down the road.

I have never heard this before. Time to do some Googling. Thank you.

Great idea about the club cards. I carry some of the cards in my wallet so I figure I don’t need them on my key ring too. So out they went.

Willow I found that when I took the time to actually go through them, I only used a few of them. So making the combined card helped me a lot. Thank you for commenting.

Just One Club Card sounds great! Thanks for sharing!

As for having a bottle opener – I actually have one and it has been used on numerous occasions in the past six years, so I haven’t found a need to part with it just yet. 🙂

I love the Just One Card idea. I have people ask me at stores every time I pull it out to use it.
