Make Your Own Laundry Detergent

I really hate going to the grocery store and spending $20+ on a large container of soap to clean my clothes. I don’t need or want the flowery smells. I just want my clothes clean.

So last year I bought a cool ebook that had some great “recipes” in it for making your own cleaning products. Here is the recipe for laundry detergent:

1/2 bar Fels Naptha, grated
1 cup Borax
1 cup Washing Soda
Large Stock pot
Wooden spoon
5 gallons water
5 gallon bucket
Smaller storage container for near the washer

Lets walk through it.

Grate the Fels Naptha bar

Add borax, washing soda and 1 quart of the water into the large stock pot.

Heat on warm, stirring with the wooden spoon until the Fels Naptha is completely dissolved.

Pour 1 gallon of water in the bottom of the 5 gallon bucket. Add the dissolved Fels Naptha mixture and stir well. Top off the bucket with the rest of the water, stirring as you add it.

Cover the bucket and let settle overnight.

Stir the mixture well the next day and pour into a smaller container for your laundry area as needed. It looks a lot like egg drop soup when it is done and works great.

Use ½ cup of this detergent per load of clothes, ¾ cup for heavily-soiled loads.

If you do the math with the ingredients, you pay less than $5 for the whole batch. Plus you can do as much as 100 load of laundry out of the batch. Without all of the random chemicals and smells.

I did have a hard time finding the Fels Naptha. I ended up finding it at a Dollar Store and then also Krogers. If you don’t have any luck finding it then you can buy it on Amazon.

I’ll be adding some more recipes soon for cleaning products that I use everyday. Thanks for dropping by!
