I Need a Few Weight Loss Guinea Pigs

Part of my New Year’s resolution is to help others lose weight this year. Now I’m not a personal trainer or anything like that. But I think that a lot of time people can benefit with just a little advice and a lot of motivation. This is what helped me out last year.

Problem: The average American who works an 8 to 5 job starts the day around 6:00AM. They often don’t eat a good breakfast as they ready children for school and rush out the door to fight the morning commute. They often will only have a coffee breakfast or a small high carb (oatmeal, poptart or bagel) “snack” around 8:00AM when they get to work. People very rarely have time for a real breakfast to start out the day. You know the saying “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day”? Well the reason for this is to start your body with the fuel for the day. If you think of your body using a fire metaphor, after 6 to 8 hours of sleep. Your body’s fire is no longer hot and bright. It has burned down to coals and emits very little heat to continue burning on the little fuel that it has left. The body is tired and sluggish till you get some fuel for your fire.

Solution: Consume a high protein (25-30 grams) meal within the first 30 minutes of waking up. The average chicken breast contains 35 grams of protein. The average egg contains 6 grams each. When at all possible it is better to get protein from solid food rather than fluids. Because they take longer to digest and burn more calories in the digestion process. But honestly I don’t have time for this in my morning routine. My alarm goes off at 5:30AM, I usually stumble into the the kitchen and mix a protein shake in a shaker bottle. I drink half of it fairly quick and drink the rest as I am getting my son and myself ready for the day. If I snooze a little too much in a morning I will just take the shaker with me as I drive to work. It is a very simple change to my regular morning routine and I’ve noticed a change in my energy level in the very first week.

The author of the The 4-Hour Body said that with just this change that his 65 year old father was able to lose 5-10 pounds a month over a three month period.

So my desire is to find several people who are willing to try this for a 30 day period. I want you to weigh yourself on day one. Then send me updates once a week. I don’t need you to send a specific weight for your own privacy. Just send a +/- to your first baseline weight. I’ll display results on this blog without displaying names.

    You totally used my normal breakfast routine as your example (ie: coffee and/or poptart). 😛

    Marc, there are protein bars that get in the 30g range – do you think one of those for breakfast would be a valid option for testing this theory?

      Yes the protein bars would work great. The idea is to add an additional meal to your daily routine. Something to get your body moving while you do the commute to work. Be careful with the bars though. Some are really high in calories. I bet you won’t be able to find a bar with 30g that is under 300 calories. Where you can do a protein shake for under 100 if you use water as your liquid.

    I’m in! I’m TERRIBLE at eating on teaching days (Tues/Thurs), and don’t get around to eating until 3PM.
